QUESTIONS on the EDGE of CHAOS
by Joanna Poppink

Friend:
Is your work representational or abstract? |
| |
 |
Artist:
(Silence) |
 |
Friend:
(Awkward) |
| |
 |
Artist: (Struggles) |
 |
Friend:
What I mean is, are your paintings pictures of real things? |
| |
 |
Artist: Some look
like what people call abstract. Some look like what people call
real things. To me, I'm attempting to paint what the world really
looks like. |
 |
Friend:
(Awkward, struggles) What? |
| |
 |
Artist: Look closely
at small portions of large things and imagine them framed as paintings.
Like the bark of a tree or the pattern in a man's beard, the grain
of a stone or the texture of your own skin. You will begin to
see that abstract paintings can be what the world really looks
like. |
 |
Friend:
(Looking around) Oh. I see. |
| |
 |
Artist: Yes. |
